Mercury Retrograde isn’t The Problem
It’s time for a Mercury Retrograde rebrand.
Because there’s so much more to this transit than pop culture has led us to believe.
Mercury Retrograde is the sacred plateau. The pause before the breath out. The void where we can receive fresh perspective & inspiration without the pressure to act before we’ve integrated it all.
It’s only when you resist this energy that the shiz goes down — because it’s mirroring your wounds around hustle, chaos, & control.
The real problem: Our acceptance and over-dependence on an outdated system that distances us from natural cycles, glorifies over-working, and conditions us to feel discomfort when things slow down and get real.
This article was written by a human, experiencing human things. Not AI. (Hi! 👋🏻) Because I believe that words are far more meaningful and powerful when there's open-hearted energy and lived experience behind them.
What Exactly is Mercury Retrograde?
You’ve probably heard the term Mercury Retrograde tossed around in conversations and articles warning you about it bringing chaos, miscommunications, and, in turn, frustrations.
You may even have heard that the planet Mercury moves backwards during this time — it doesn’t. It’s an optical illusion that holds a great deal of symbolism (slowing down, receiving, reviewing, and seeing things in a new way).
Here’s what’s actually happening: a few times a year, Mercury passes us in its orbit around the sun (it moves faster than us), and during that time, we experience an energetic shift.
It’s not negative energy, it’s just different from what we’re used to.
And that's by design.
Our bodies, the moon, and the planets work in cycles. And this is simply one of them.
When you begin to embrace cyclic living, resistance eases, and your life becomes a sacred dance with the cosmos.
Mercury’s Symbolism
The planet Mercury was named after the Roman god — previously known as Hermes in Greek mythology — because it’s the fastest planet to move around the sun, and Hermes was known for his speed. He was quick-witted, clever, at times tricky, and was the messenger between realms.
In astrology, the planet carries Hermes' energetic signature. It's the energy behind how we communicate with one another, the way we gather, think about, and process information, as well as our technology and transportation.
When Mercury goes into retrograde, the energy of these themes change. And we often perceive these changes as misalignment or disruption. But what if these disruptions are necessary for slowing down, recalibration, reassessment, fresh perspectives, and integration?
It's Not About Surviving Mercury Retrograde
For the past 15 years or so, there’s been an alarming number of memes, posts, and articles inundating the collective with headlines like “How to Survive Mercury Retrograde” as if it’s attacking us.
It reminds me of how the paparazzi can take a single photo of a celebrity couple glancing at each other and come up with a destructive narrative that circulates for years.
The shadow aspect of the spiritual community does this too. In this case, it’s been a long-winded, fear-based smear campaign about a planet moving through its natural cycle.
I remember first hearing about Mercury Retrograde from a corporate colleague about 13 years ago, and I started warning my team about it days before it happened — yes, I was part of the smear campaign.
But now I’m making things right.
What Mercury Retrograde is Doing For You
Mercury Retrograde isn’t your enemy or your friend. It’s a messenger. And if you listen closely, it’s telling you…
→ “Slow down, you’ve been going way too fast. You’re on the path to stumbling or burning out. Honour the rhythm and natural cycles of your experience.”
→ “Give your brain a content break. This is a time to receive fresh ideas, and you can’t do that when you’re consuming everyone else’s. Create space.”
→ “Stop over-relying on technology — it’s not dependable.”
→ “Pause before hitting send. Reread. Is your true intention coming through?”
→ “Do you really want to purchase that?”
→ “Is this person/business trustworthy? Tune in and review before you sign that.”
→ “Have you been creating online posts to appease a false algorithmic god or is it because you genuinely have something to share? Take back your sovereignty.”
→ “It’s time to focus on resiliency over perfection — it will get you much further in life. Stop sweating the small stuff.”
→ “Remember that thing that happened 5 years ago, yeah, it’s still bothering you. You don’t need to analyze it — just feel into it and hear it out.”
→ “Is this really a text or an in-person call? If it feels cringy, it’s definitely a heart-led, slow-paced, in-person call.”

My Experience Aligning with Mercury Retrograde’s Higher Potential
When I see Mercury retrograde on its way in the calendar, I mentally prepare, ensure I’ve got website tech things wrapped up or rescheduled, get ready to slow way down...
And then I welcome the energy.
Why?
Because I see this as a mystical, creative, and introspective time. It’s like going on a mini mental retreat. I take all the pressure to perform off and see what inspiration comes my way.
During Mercury Retrograde I…
receive — new ideas, new direction, clarity
review — what’s not working
resist — bingeing content
revive — the inner creative and let her play (this is when I do my best writing)
reprocess — old narratives or memories somatically
I find that after a Mercury Retrograde, I feel a lot clearer about what I want and where I’m headed.
Was it always this way? No!
I used to deal with this energy with force, not flow, and that resulted in a whole lot of frustration.
But when you let go of your deep need to control all outcomes, get curious about what's to come, slow down, and have a little humour when it comes to the hicups it can bring, this acceptance leads you out of resistance and into alignment.
To flow isn’t weak — it takes inner strength to trust that you can slow down in a world that’s conditioned you that speed = success.
In this moment, I sit here, barefoot and cross-legged, on the comfy desk chair I inherited from my dad and type each word, rhythmically one after the other — even though I know I could have gotten ChatGPT to write me this article within seconds (no thank you, AI).
Mercury Retrograde reminds us to embrace what modern technology is rapidly conditioning us to loathe — which is essentially our humanness.
